Technology and Enterprise - Richard Noble OBE

21st June 2024

It was an honour to have Guest speaker Richard Noble OBE, Director of Thrust Boats Ltd, share his remarkable journey with Year 7, 8, and 9 students (plus a group of Y10 D&T and P16 IT) yesterday. Richard, a Scottish entrepreneur and former holder of the land speed record, discussed his quest for speed inspired by the legendary Speed King John Cobb.

Between 1983 and 1997, Richard piloted Thrust2 to a mind-boggling speed of 633.468 mph in the US. With only 14 official attempts to break the World Speed Record (WSR), including 6 fatal accidents, Richard highlighted the critical importance of diligent research and risk management in such ventures.

Notably, in 2017 students from Helston witnessed Richard’s pursuit of the land speed record with the Bloodhound at Newquay Airport, a project unfortunately halted due to funding issues. Undaunted, Richard shifted focus to the Water Speed Record, which has remained unbroken since 1978 at 317.596mph, showcasing the immense challenges and risks involved.

Accompanied by Len Newton, Richard elaborated on their rigorous research and testing programme aimed at conquering the water speed record. Despite the unyielding dangers, the team's determination and expertise in engineering, mathematics, computer science, science, product design, and project management have propelled them towards this audacious goal. The pursuit of success in such a perilous endeavour epitomises the values of inspiration, resilience, and unwavering dedication.

These engrossing sessions with Richard Noble emphasised the significance of attributes such as inspiration, drive, determination, resilience, and leadership in monumental endeavours. The students were left with a profound understanding of the grit and innovation required to push boundaries and achieve extraordinary goals. #STEM #Grit #Leadership
