SEND Information

At Helston Community College we:
  • Recognise that all students are talented and that it is our duty as educators to support in the discovery, development and enjoyment of these talents
  • Promote the understanding that we are all teachers of individuals, some of whom may have special needs. It is our duty to help all students learn to the best of their ability.
  • Support the concept of learning potential and provide students with appropriate support in order to maximise their learning as part of the Equal Opportunities policy of the College.
  • Support all students to become independent and proactive learners

Our key aim is to help our students to help themselves; we will promote and support their journey towards independence in learning and in life. We do our best to ensure that there is the necessary provision for all students in this College who have SEND and ensure that those needs are known to all who are likely to have contact with them. We have a SEND team of skilled staff who specialise in SEND provision and support, working alongside highly skilled teachers and support staff.

Once a child’s needs are identified, support will be provided in a range of ways including:

  • Quality first teaching, with suitable scaffolding to meet all learners’ needs, supported by training from outside agencies
  • Modification of teaching methods/materials
  • A regularly reviewed learning passport, aimed to improve communication and consistency of support within the Assess/Plan/ Do/Review framework
  • Classroom support by teacher/Teaching Assistant (TA)
  • Subject level small group intervention
  • Specialised intervention programmes including: phonics teaching, dyslexia support, autism support, life skills and social, emotional and mental health support
  • Input from external agencies
  • Specialist equipment
  • ICT support

We believe that academic success requires support from home as well as school and as such we seek to encourage parents to take an active part in their child’s education. Regular opportunities are provided for parents and carers to come into school to discuss support and review progress, both formally and informally.

Our SENCO is Mr Eugene McFadden and his email address is emcfadden@helston.tpacademytrust.org
