Flora Day 2019

14th May 2019

Helston Community College was proudly represented by almost 600 students during the children’s dance on Helston’s biggest day of the year. Flora day is an event where the whole community comes together, uniting families and generations; our college played a central role in this, with students from every year group taking part in the dance. For many students, it was their first time taking part on the day and many weeks of preparation had gone into learning the steps and preparing their clothes in readiness for the day. For the first time in (what felt like!) many years, the weather was kind to us and stayed dry for the whole dance, with the sun even making an appearance at several points! Students and staff alike had a tremendous time, enjoying every moment of taking part in such a prestigious and ancient tradition.

For a small group of KS3 students, it was a particularly memorable Flora Day, as later that day, they were lucky enough to be filmed for BBC children’s programme ‘All Over the Place’. Students from year 7 and 8 took part in a ‘mini’ dance competition, where they had to teach two TV presenters how to dance and then perform in front of judges in order to win a trophy! A fantastic time was had by all and we look forward to seeing the show when it airs sometime next year.

Many thanks to Mrs Renyard particularly for all of her efforts in organising the school's participation.
