Geology Field Trip Carn Brea Year 12

5th March 2019

Year 12 Geology Trip to Carn Brea

On Friday 1st March the Year 12 Geologists embraced rapidly deteriorating weather conditions to complete a study of the Carn Brea Granite. This comprised detailed field sketches of the macro features of the tors together with descriptions of the micro features of the granite. This information allowed the students to work out the cooling history of the pluton. In addition to their granite study, the students learned how to triangulate their location onto base maps and add rock outcrops to ordnance survey maps. By the end of the afternoon, the students had completed three of their specified practicals required for A-Level Geology. Throughout the afternoon, the students showed great resilience supporting one another in typical March weather.
